KILI LONDOROSSI 9 DAY ROUTE

A 9-day adventure on Kilimanjaro, ascending from the western Lemosho route up onto the Shira Plateau, traversing the northern Rongai route, and summit via the eastern side of the mountain

Day 0
Arrive at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, pick up and transferred to the Springlands Hotel or similar for overnight Dinner and Breakfast Included.

Day 1
Lemosho Glades to Mkubwa Camp
After a drive to Londorossi for clearance into the park, enjoy a short forest drive to the Lemosho Glades and walk to the Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite.

Day 2
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira Camp 1
The trail gradually steepens entering moorland where we’ll cross the Shira Ridge then gently drop to a plateau to make camp   at 3,600 m/11,810 ft. and drops gently to Shira Camp 1 located by a stream on the Shira Plateau

Day 3
SHIRA 1 CAMP ~ MOIR CAMP (13,800 ft. / 4,205m)
Trek across the Shira plateau, east toward Kibo’s glacier peak. We veer away toward the northeast edge of the Plateau to reach Moir Camp. Moir camp is an isolated and seldom used camp affording views over the Shira Plateau.

Day 4
MOIR CAMP ~ BUFFALO/POFU CAMP
Begin the morning trek heading out of the moorland and into the stark alpine desert, on a steep ridge off the main trail. From the Pofu Campsite, you will enjoy a magnificent view of Kenya’s wild lands to the north.

Day 5
BUFFALO/POFU CAMP ~ KIKELEWA/THIRD CAVES CAMP (11,800 ft. 3600m)
We proceed onward through valleys and over ridges through the alpine desert and moorland, enjoying a vast mountain wilderness to ourselves.

Day 6
KIKELEWA/THIRD CAVES CAMP ~ MAWENZI TARN CAMP 

Trek steadily upward to reach a placid mountain tarn at the foot of the majestically rising steep ridges of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro second highest volcano. The camp here is nestled along the tarn in a protected alcove with magnificent views towards the steeply rising rocks of Mawenzi.

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 7
MAWENZI TARN CAMP ~ OUTWARD BOUND CAMP (15,585 ft./ 4,750m)
Today we go through a relatively easy hike across the wide “saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trek takes you across the massive saddle- the crossing is impressive and the landscape spectacularly stark. The temperatures turn cold as you near the foot of Kibo, reaching Outward Bound Camp.

Day 8
OUTWARD BOUND CAMP ~ UHURU PEAK
At midnight we start for the summit, trekking a winding path of endless switchbacks to the edge of the crater. The slope is steep, with switchbacks, over loose rock and scree with some boulders as you near Gilman’s Point. From there the trail to the summit is less demanding and you’ll soon reach the snowy Uhuru peak (depending on the season). After a short time at the summit, retrace your steps back to Gilman’s Point, then summon your strength again for a further descent to Mweka Camp for the night.

Day 9
MWEKA CAMP ~ MWEKA GATE
You descend straight to the gate where you’ll will be awarded a Kilimanjaro mountain climbing certificate then board the already waiting vehicle and drive back to Moshi to the Springlands Hotel of overnight.

  • Elevation: 3100m to 1830m
  • Hiking Time: 2-3 hours
  • Habitat: Rain Forest
